A Beautiful Memory
May. 30th, 2022 08:28 pm
[Excerpted from Ch 16]
While standing by the window, I gaze outside past our estate. The sun hangs behind a cloud as a storm approaches. My twin brother catches me off guard.
"Boo!" He jumps beside.
"Ungakwenzi lokho!" I scold him with red cheeks.
"You're embarrassed!" He laughs and places an arm around my shoulder. "Why don't we play in the mud?"
"Because it's dirty?" I slink down towards the floor.
I place my head against the wall. 'I don't feel like playing today.' My thoughts are unlike my typical mischievous self. Yet, I cannot seem to gather enough energy to smile. 'So how can I even play?' Besides, ubaba would be angry with us if we enter the house covered in mud.
"Don't be such a gloomy gloomer," Ihlathi pays my head. "It'll be fine! We just have to not get caught."
...My brother places a finger to his chin. I can see his eyes flicker from one direction to another. I wonder what he is thinking about. In another moment, he clasps his hands.
"Let's play for just a wee bit!" His bright green eyes beam. "We can be inside and change before he notices!"
I sigh. A change in scenery may do my mind good. I follow Ihlathi [ and we] proceed to go through the back door. The rain pounds the ground.
"Woza!" Ihlathi grabs my arm.
His energy is higher than mine. Though, after several moments of watching him romp around in the rain, I smile.
"You're right! This is funner than being stuck inside!" I cheer as I tag him and run across the yard.
The more we cross through the grass, the dirtier our clothes become.
"Eww, I think I have mud in my boots!" Ihlathi plops onto the ground and removes his shoes. "Barefoot sprint!"
In spite of myself, I follow his lead. We slip and fall into each other.

"Tula tuulan tulituli tei,
oma onni se yhtehen vei,
ja tulkohon hallat ja harmit ja muut,
ilo huoleton meilla on, naurussa suut,
ja kirkkaana paiva ja ilta"
"Tula, tuulan, tuli, tuli, tei,
Never shall we part, no,2
My arctic raspberry, my snow bunting,
my swallow,
You are my greatest treasure
I am yours,
What else could I wish!
Tula, tuulan, tuli, tuli, tei,
Luck has brought us together
and let the frost come, and all other problems,
Our life is carefree,
And we have laughter in our mouths
And our days and nights are bright."

After years of struggling to find an entry way into the writing industry, I finally received an opportunity to write a novel. "Umlingo the Rogue Warlock" is a dark fantasy tale of a rambunctious rogue elf. In attempts to rise the stakes, Umlingo searches for greater heists than just a simple fish. Yet, as his journey continues, Umlingo finds himself caught in a captive situation- yet, how will he escape?
Thank you for your time! If you have a moment, then please enjoy the free chapters on webnovel. Should you find yourself reading the rest, then you earn my full gratitude!
So, how does unlocking chapters work in WebNovel? I was curious how people can read past the free content of "Umlingo the Rogue Warlock." I'm very new to the format and did not know how much the whole book would cost readers. With the WebNovel app in hand, I decide to take a gander. For chapters 10-19 a reader would pay 4.99. Otherwise, they can unlock the whole book for 9.99. The system seems fair in that the cost is the same and readers can explore more of the novel before buying the remaining tale.
Thank you for your time and please, check out "Umlingo the Rogue Warlock" on WebNovel!

When They Walk
Nov. 1st, 2021 03:10 amThe ocean waves sooth like a pleasant melody. Unlike the previous day’s anxieties, there is a sense of ease in the salt breeze. Hungry, Umlingo scavenges from the shark’s remains. The pieces of flesh that was not obliterated by the Eldritch Blast are charred and have the texture of leather. The elf stands while looking into the ocean. His gaze transfers to the far reaches of the beach. The black sand presents him with a newfound curiosity. Without any indication of where to be, Umlingo decides to investigate.
The transformation from squid to elf has lasting effects. Muscles and coordination fail to cooperate. Movement is clumsy, and Umlingo frequently finds himself planted in the sand. Once grounded, Umlingo slowly steadies himself upright while dusting off the black granules from his bare knees. He shakes his head from side to side. Now, the elf’s head resembles a child. The size and age differentiation frustrates Umlingo. He would rather be a complete child or a full-grown adult. Regardless, focusing on what cannot be altered will only create discomfort.
A piercing cry courses through the wind. The sound returns Umlingo’s attention to the external world. At first, he perceives that the wind is at fault. However, his pale pink eyes catch an object moving towards his direction. Nervous from the shark incident, Umlingo searches for cover. On the left, bramble adorns the beach. The elf stumbles behind the brush. Yet, to his dismay, the creature hovers in front of his poor hiding spot. An imp, the size of a small child, sniffs the air. The imp drops a leather bag to the sand. Bringing its wings upward, the creature prepares to land. Umlingo stares, unable to decide whether or not to attack. Upon closer observation, he realizes that the imp appears confused… Perhaps he is lost…
“What are…you after?” Umlingo’s words squeak out with difficulty.
The elf stands still. Both begin to stare at one another. With an extra sniff, the imp determines that the source of its search has been found. The creature scurries over as a dog would when visiting his master. Unnerved, Umlingo attempts to walk away. With one misstep, the elf crashes to the ground. He grunts in pain. The imp lunges affectionately into Umlingo; further, rubbing its head against the elf’s face. Umlingo shoves the creature off. For a moment, the imp stares with sad eyes. The creature’s emotion triggers Umlingo’s thoughts.
A vision flashes briefly in his mind. He sees himself clad in leather armor. Umlingo’s hand moves upward. A surge of magical energy courses to his index finger. While waving his hand in the air, Umlingo draws a sigil. With a burst of magic, a creature emerges.
“Impy!” Umlingo’s voice cracks as he breaks from the vision.
He stumbles over to the creature. Impy wags his scorpion tail in delight. Umlingo pats his head while avoiding the little devil’s horns. The imp returns his attention onto the leather bag. He bounces over to retrieve the mysterious bag and places it by Umlingo’s feet. The elf stares inquisitively with a tilt of his head. He bends down to observe item closely. Within the bag rests: a dagger; a small hand axe; a canteen; robes; a mysterious orb; a leather journal; ten incense sticks; and tiny, grey humanoid beings. Once the bag opens, out comes the strange creatures the size of mice. Impy stands back and hisses. Umlingo demands that he stops before the little devil would lash out onto the foreign entities.
“Look,” his child-like voice scratches his voice. With a cough, the elf continues to speak; “I think…that they’re doing…something.”
Curiosity takes hold of Umlingo, while watching the tinyling’s behavior. He stares with wide eyes. Suddenly, each of the grey creatures disappear into smoke. Once the mist clears, Umlingo spies a lantern. There, circling around the light, are new tiny beings.
“They’re friends,” Umlingo cheers.
Friends, he did not know the word before. Yet, the new word sounds pleasant. The elf kneels down to play with the tinylings. With his hand outreached, the tiny creatures begin to crawl and jump on the elf. Impy huffs and squats down next to his master. Soon, even the tinylings play with the imp’s tail. He raises his claws, then recoils after noticing Umlingo’s disapproving glance.
Eventually, the tiny friends return to the bag. Umlingo smiles as he notices that the lantern remains lit. He sets his gaze inside the bag. Pulling out a robe, he holds it out in front of him. Umlingo squints at the cloth while pondering its function. Impy nudges Umlingo’s leg. With the elf’s attention, the imp snuggles into the robe.
“Oh?” Umlingo muses with the imp’s assistance. Apparently, the little devil knows more than he does at the moment.
The robe is soft to the touch. Umlingo dons the black fabric. With a pleased grin, he pats Impy on the head. Should Umlingo’s voice feel more comfortable, then he would thank the creature out loud. Yet, Impy does not need words to understands his master’s appreciation. Umlingo places the bag onto his back. With determination in his eyes, the elf begins walking along the beach. The imp follows behind while flapping his wings.
A friend… Umlingo thinks to himself. Let’s find a friend and perhaps they may know more of this strange place.

A friend… Umlingo thinks to himself. Let’s find a friend and perhaps they may know more of this strange place.
There are two types of bards: those who recount events with precision and those who add finesse. There is no issue with exaggeration. After all, no one remembers a dull tale. If one wants history to be remembered, then they must be an exciting storyteller. Yet, exaggeration in a tale does not refer to the spewing of venom. Sure, deception is key to survival. On the other note, to be caught in a lie would be damning for any bard. Should people across many towns and providences begin suspecting a storyteller of falsehood, then they could never trust that bard’s accounts. Perhaps, such is the reason for enlisting scribes with the sole duty of recording history.
Nonetheless, I would prefer the bard’s presentation of events. During my younger days, I have always been fond of bard culture. Stories, both true and fantastical, excited my young heart more than jewels. The stories of a renowned bard are more precious than a chest filled with gold. As the bard travels between town and city, they become an agent of connectivity. Anyone that encounters the bard are in some way bonded to others who took the time to listen.
Race no longer matters; Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Tieflings, and every other being become a part of the audience. Although performances may vary, one matter remains unchanged, they’ve heard the same tales. True, a bard’s performance may vary as they learn new methods of engaging their audience. However, the heart of a bard’s tale stands strong and personalized. For instance, two bards may recount the same battle. The first performs with broad gestures and a booming narrative. The dramatic display is their preferred technique in reeling in an audience. Yet, down another street, the second bard takes out an instrument. Perhaps the lyre is the storyteller’s lover. Passionately, the second bard tells his story through song. More people gather around the skilled musician. Now, the scenario is not meant to classify which method is better; rather, the example demonstrates how a bard’s energy can draw those around them.
Evidently, you may say that the bard I choose to hear is the latter. A traveler by foot, the first bard that piqued my thirst for tales was an old dwarf by the name of Nyr. An odd encounter one would suggest should they believe that all elves and dwarves resented one another. No, such was not the case. The elves of my city, Umndeni, respected the dwarven bard. Once Nyr was invited to the city, he was always welcomed to return. He would walk across the bridge and shuffle towards the inn. There in the street, he would perform. With his trusted lyre, Nyr would recall the details off his recent travels.
A bard is more than a storyteller, they are the teachers who pass onto their students a determination for freedom and a passion for travel.
“We learn based on our footsteps,” Nyr would tell me.
“What’s your meaning?” I’d ask with a young child’s stare.
“The roads we walk and the towns our feet bring us to all point towards something important to learn. In other meanings, we learn best with each mindful step.” The dwarf smiled at every opportunity to share with youth.
My twin brother and I would visit Nyr at the inn. Frequently, we would pay for his lunches. In a gesture of gratitude, Nyr imparted us with a new lesson. Our father grew frustrated with how often we diverted our attention from our studies to the inn. Apparently, he didn’t want someone else teaching his children about life when simply “knows best.” Our father had always been strict; from parenting to scholastics. After the loss of mother, he became increasingly controlling. At least, I hoped that he wasn’t as overbearing to her as he was to us. There was a point in our childhood when father would prevent our trips to the inn. With magic, he could ensure that both of his dear sons were able to attend schooling as they should. To our father’s lack of knowledge, we developed a plan of reaction.
“Let’s sneak out,” I suggested to my brother.
With a catty grin, Ihlathi agreed.
“As soon as he’s asleep,” he explained. “Then we can ask Nyr for a bedtime story.”
The plan went on well for a few weeks. The old bard was apprehensive at first. After all, “children should not wander through dark streets.” Yet, with a bit of magic, anything is possible. Nyr decided to teach us a sneaky trick. Without wanting to alarm the fellow gatherers at the inn, he brought us to a small table in an enclosed nook. Everyone else was too busy with their drink and talk so the lesson could go underway.
“You two are elves so you both should have a lot of magic within,” he stated with a sense of affirmation.
“Glad, that you’re confident,” Ihlathi replied with a slanted smile. “Our father hasn’t taught us any magic yet.”
“I’m not sure if he will,” I huffed to add. “He uses magic to keep us home all day. I doubt he would teach us any spells since we would simply leave more often.”
“That’s a shame,” Nyr shakes his head. “If only he were more compassionate, then he wouldn’t drive his own children out of their own home.”
“Well,” Ihlathi beamed. “At least we are clever enough to come visit!”
“Don’t worry I have an idea,” Nyr placed his hand inside of a small pouch and removed an object. “Within my hand are two magic rings. Should they work, then both of you will be able to turn invisible. The rings will be able to keep you two lads safe while walking out at night.”
“Really?” I rose in my seat. “That’s cool!”
“What if they don’t work?” Ihlathi said calmly.
“Well,” Nyr sighed. “Then I’m going to have to ask that you both to stop coming here late. I know your father holds some resentment. Yet, I would be more damned if any ill fell onto you both for visiting me. I think of you two as my own grandchildren after all.”
“Ah! But you’re a better teacher than father!” I cried out against the thought of staying home.
“That’s true,” my brother agreed.
“Well, let’s see if you two will be able to use the rings,” the dwarf replied.
He opened up his palm. My brother and I passed glances at each other with our mouths agape. Rings? There seemed to be nothing in his hand!
“They two are invisible,” he laughed unable to resist the comical appeal of our faces.
“Very well,” Ihlathi said with his head held up. “So, how are we supposed to even keep these on our person? I’m sure we would just lose them.”
“If you are able to use them,” Nyr began to explain. “Then you two will be able to feel their magic. That is how you will keep track of their location.”
I shook my head from the eminent doubt and smiled; “Let’s give it a go.”
We both took one of the rings. Nyr placed them on our finger. As the mysterious object and my hand made contact, I could feel a little pulsation. That must have been the magic he was mentioning. I peered at Ihlathi in efforts to see if he felt any sensation. Locking eyes, he shrugged his shoulders;
“Nothing seems different,” he observed.
“My finger does tingle a bit,” I replied.
“That’s the magic my friend,” Nyr grinned. “Now, if you are able to focus on that energy and concentrate, then you will turn invisible.”
Concentration? Well, I was at a loss. I tried to feel the energy of the ring. Once I latched onto the pulsation, I didn’t know what else to do. Even after some coaching from our dwarven friend, nothing happened. Ihlathi and I were both visible as the sun. Suddenly, we were overwhelmed with disappointment. Failing to use the invisibility rings meant that we would not be able to visit our friend and teacher.
“I’m sorry,” the dwarf responded to our emotion. “Don’t worry, with practice the rings will work. Until then, you two can just hold onto them.”
“Wait, really?” I asked. “Aren’t these pricy?”
“Think of them as a gift,” Nyr smiled. “Though understand that I’m trusting that you two won’t commit any mischief whenever you both figure out how to use the rings.”
“I promise,” Ihlathi said with a salute.
“Yeah, I promise too!” I followed suit.
“Good,” the dwarf grinned. “Now you two should return home before it gets any later.”
With resistant “goodbyes” my brother and I headed back to the house. Carefully, we walked down the dark windy streets. I remember that the wind felt nice that night. There was a new challenge at hand for us to tackle: Invisibility. Ihlathi and I talked about how cool it would be to achieve such an ability. Although we vowed to do no mischief, the temptation to bother father and not get caught would be fulfilling. The only caveat was that we could not loose our rings. I don’t know what would be worse: loosing magical rings, or losing a gift. The sentiment attached added to their value.
“I wouldn’t sell these for the world,” Ihlathi said as he flopped onto his bed.
“Neither I,” I replied while climbing through our bedroom window.
I can remember the next several days of attempting magic behind our father’s back. Ihlathi and I kept the rings on our fingers. Should we place them down, then we were afraid of their disappearance. I slowly felt more of the ring’s magical flow. For a moment in my childhood, I was the teacher. The only assistance I could provide Ihlathi, was a description of how the energy courses through one’s finger. The energy radiated outward from the ring’s center, causing the veins to pulsate along with the ring’s vibration.
“That’s it!” I shouted with glee one afternoon.
“What’s it?” our father asked with a scowl.
“Oh, I just have been,” I fumbled for words while looking down at the parchment in front of me. “Excited by my read of this text!”
“Good,” father smiled. Then he dreadfully crossed his arms. “Explain.”
With a blank stare and a stammer, I relayed as much of the details as I could recall. (Retrospectively, I do not remember what was read).
“I’m glad that you seem to be concentrating better Umlingo,” he smiled while patting my head.
Once he departed from the room, my brother let out a sigh. Within another moment he
asked; “What did you figure out?”
“Our own magic has to flow into the ring,” I began to ramble on my discovery. “Then, we match our energy with that of the ring. Once the ring’s energy and our own resonates, then invisibility should be reached!”
“How exciting!” Ihlathi restrained his excitement. “So, can you make the spell work?”
“Absolutely,” I paused. “Not.”
“You were never good with execution were you,” my brother shook his head.
“Well, then, you unlock the ring’s power!” I huffed while pouting.
Ihlathi and I stared at one another in silence. After another awkward moment had passed, we both broke out in laughter. Father returned to our study room and passed a disapproving gaze. We silenced and peered over our parchments. Once we were safe to speak again, Ihlathi grew excited.
“What if you use your energy to help me with my ring?” he asked as though I would comprehend his revelation.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“I can explain as we try,” he replied with certainty.
He took my hand and placed it above his own. Faintly, I began to feel the energy emanate from his ring. I smiled, maybe we could figure out the secret while working together. I poured my own energy into his hand. Acting as a source, I was able to give Ihlathi more magical energy then he seemed to possess. My brother closed his eyes and furrowed his brows. Within another half hour or so of silent concentration, Ihlathi succeeded.
“Woah it worked!” I said staring through my brother’s invisible form.
He did not speak to me. Yet, I could understand what he wanted to do. Ihlathi left the room, only his footsteps could be heard. Fortunately for him, father removed the magical barrier from the home. Good behavior is rewarded with some freedom. At least that day we were permitted to explore the backyard. Rest assured, I had to maintain Ihlathi’s secret escape. Otherwise, there was no telling what father would do in reaction of our mischief.
An hour passed with no sign of my twin. My head grew heavy and slumped onto the parchment that I was reading. A flash of color passed through my mind’s eye. Deep within a trance, I found myself in my brother’s shoes. He was walking down towards the inn. The many people littering the street could not see him. The magic still presented itself to him. He bumped into a woman while entering the old tavern. She glanced around and saw another elf.
“How dare you?” she spat her misplaced venom at the unexpectant passerby.
He merely shrugged her off. Angered with being ignored, the woman became aggressive. My brother continued his path; further, not willing to break his concentration. Nyr was sitting with a group of elves- enamoring them with a grand tale. Once he peeked over into Ihlathi’s position, the bard grew alarmed. The spell worn off and Ihlathi became exposed!
The vision faded when I felt a stern hand on my shoulder. My body jolted upright. I turned to face my father, afraid that he discovered my brother’s disappearance. His amber eyes pierced my core.
“Where is your brother?” Father’s voice attempted to restrain his discontent.
“Um,” I could only utter a squeak.
He grabbed me by my blouse. Pulling me closer to his nose, he asked again; “Where is your brother?”
To our surprise, Ihlathi’s voice piqued from the doorway.
“I’m right here father,” he said shocked to see the angry elf. “I was in the restroom.”
“Very well,” Father released his grip. “I think it best if you two finish your work. Dinner will be ready in forty minutes.”
“Thank you,” Ihlathi attempted to coax father.
Perhaps, that was not the best decision. As father exited the study room, he passed a suspicious glare at us. He couldn’t have figured out the truth that easily. Could he? My young thoughts spiraled in my mind. I shook my head and gathered my schooling materials. We had to clean our station before going to dinner. While I placed my study parchments back onto the bookshelf, Ihlathi approached me with a wicked grin.
“It worked!” He chimed. “And father doesn’t have a clue.”
“For now,” I said with a lack of confidence. “I thought he was going to throttle me until I told him where you were.”
“It’s fine Umlingo,” my brother patted my shoulder. “I saw our friend and oh how shocked he was to see that we were able to conjure the ring’s magic.”
“Hm, what did he say?” I began to ask. “Especially if knowing how difficult of a task that was for us.”
“I explained the whole process to him,” my brother smiled. “He was amazed to hear how well we worked together. I think with more practice we would both be able to use the ring. Then we can sneak back at the inn for a tale.”
My brother’s smile was contagious. I absorbed his positive glow and beamed. What good the ring could serve us! We wouldn’t be prisoners of our own home anymore. As time for dinner came, Ihlathi shared another secret;
“I already ate…”
“Shite,” I whispered.
We sat down at the dining room table. There was an assortment of meats and vegetables. For dessert, father prepared a fruit pie. Yes, although our family had enough gold to pay for servants, father was against outsiders from entering the house. He instead prepared all meals and maintained the home. Every detail had to be satisfactory to his design; moreover, providing a distrust in another’s capabilities to achieve the standards that he reaches. He sat down and waved his hand. We gathered food onto our plates. On the other seat, Ihlathi serves himself a smaller portion than usual. Father’s eyes discerned the difference in appetite.
“Not hungry?” he asked my brother. “You don’t seem to be acting like yourself Ihlathi.”
“Oh, I feel a little ill,” the other lied.
“What a shame,” our father was not one fit for compassion. “If you require rest then, you may retire to your room.”
“That’s fine,” he answered with a sheepish smile. “I can stomach a bit of gnash.”
“Suit yourself,” father nodded and continued with his meal.
By the time dessert approached, my head was overwhelmed by a tingly sensation. I was unsure as of why, but I had a poor feeling in the pit of my stomach. Something was wrong. Our father may be hiding the fact that he indeed knew about the ring’s magic. How naïve we were to doubt it ability to sense an aura. Such thoughts are retrospective. As a child, I had no idea about magic detection. After all, even though father uses magic, he failed to teach us the fundamentals: we were not of age to be studying the arcane.
Ihlathi may not have consumed much of his dinner. Yet, he was never one to miss dessert. My brother eagerly took the pie. He did not notice the grin on father’s face. I looked to Ihlathi and gave a small cough.
“What’s wrong?” father asked with aggravation.
“I drank poorly,” I replied.
“Be more careful,” he stated with an affirmation that he bought my lie. “People don’t only choke on their food, but water as well.”
“Yeah, you can’t be too quick Umlingo,” my brother chastised playfully.
He didn’t hone in on the warning that I attempted to give him. I guess my lie was too believable even for my twin brother. I refused the pie, claiming that I was too full from dinner. Father nodded and set aside the pie dish. He did not cut a slice for himself. In a moment, I realized why. My brother shot upright in his seat and began talking in tongues.
“Where were you today?” my father asked, no growled.
“I went to the inn,” Ihlathi answered- clearly enchanted by some truth speaking serum.
“What did you do there?” father continued his interrogation.
“I visited Nyr,” he replied. “I just wanted to hear some tales.”
“Tales?” father mused over the word. “Was that all?”
“I wanted to show him the…” my brother’s words trailed off and he collapsed head first into the plate.
“Show him what?” my father glared at me. His gaze was intense and full of rage.
“He wanted to show the drawings,” I lied. “We were drawing portraits of dragons. They aren’t very good, but we wanted to help tell stories too.”
Whether or not my father was convinced, I could not decipher. He released a long sigh in effort to calm himself. He rose from is seat and approached me. Placing a hand on my back, he smiled.
“Very well,” father said. “Time to retire.”
He lifted Ihlathi and brought him to the bedroom. While left in the dining room, I sat still. When he returned, my father demanded help clearing the table. I exhaled my nervous breath. To show any signs of discomfort would provoke suspicions. Through a silent procession, the dishes and leftovers went to their designated locations. I stood by the sink. Looking outside the window, I saw that the sun was setting behind the horizon. Soon the night sky will bless us with the moonlight and a myriad of glimmering stars. Father lightly tapped my head. Concentrate. The word was insinuated by his glance. I returned to my chore, thinking about how Ihlathi was doing alone in the room. After all of the kitchen musings were passed, I left to brush my teeth.
I wanted to be swift to return to my twin’s side. There was no telling what side effects magic can hold on a younger body. Asides, I had no understandings of magic, nor could I surmise the potency of a truth serum. Father bid me a good night and shut the bedroom door. Once he was well out of earshot, I could hear snickering. I turn my head to the other bed. Ihlathi was chuckling to himself.
“I pulled a fast one, didn’t I?” he voiced with mischievous delight.
“Excuse me?” my voice dropped. I was confused.
“I couldn’t help prevent myself from talking about Nyr,” my brother began to explain. “Yet, there was no room in the nine hells for me to squeal about the rings.”
“Oh,” I uttered a basic reply. My words were lost in my mind.
How was my brother able to stop the effects of a magical potion? As though he read my mind, Ihlathi answered my question.
“Concentration,” he beamed. “I had to focus my attention on passing out. With a bit of luck and intent, I succeeded!”
I blinked my eyes. If concentration was the only necessary piece in combatting a spell, then I should learn to focus more. The rings, we could continue practicing magic with their will. Once we are able to master the invisibility rings, then perhaps Nyr would have other charms or spells we could learn.
“Maybe Nyr could teach us magic!” I said excited by the prospect.
“That would be great!” Ihlathi jumped out of his bed.
The noise alerted father. We heard his footsteps approach the door. My brother retreated to the confines of his blanket. I turned my head towards the wall. The light of a lantern poured into the room. I could see my father’s shadow on the wall in front of me. For a moment, he paused before leaving. Upon the quiet closure of the door, I exhaled.
“Close call!” I whispered across the room to Ihlathi.
We laughed as young boys would when escaping a parent’s capture. After discussing more about magic, we fell quiet. Elves do not sleep, but we do enjoy a meditative state. That night, while in a trance, my mind’s eye fluttered in and out of focus. A swirl of color washed over my internal gaze. Within the vision, I felt a sense of shock and then fear. The sky was black and the only light came from a…hand. I’m sure that my body twisted and contorted while in bed. Uneasy, I didn’t want to see the causation of the negative emotions. I couldn’t prevent my sight from delivering a horrific scene.
In the dark streets of Umndeni, two shadowy figures emerged from a back alleyway. One was tall while the other, exceedingly short. They were dueling with magic. The short character tumbled over, rolling away from their foe’s blast. Pulling out an instrument, the short one rallied their defense. Swiftly, the tall figure shuffled out of the energy’s pathway while cackling. The voice was familiar; however, the sense of malice caught me off guard. The vision began to blur as though a misty veil overcame the battle field.
Suddenly, a scream bellowed throughout the night. The gruff voice shook my core…
“Nyr!” I woke from my trance in a hot sweat.
My body convulsed from the vision’s negative energy. Ihlathi tumbled out of his bed and rushed over to me.
“What’s wrong?” he sounded distraught.
“Nyr!” I repeated the dwarf’s name through sobs. “He…he is dead!”
Before my brother could ask any further questions, a knock racked the door. Slowly, a light crept into the room. To my utter contempt, father entered with a wide grin. There was a primal intensity in his eyes that confirmed the truth of my vision. Ihlathi latched onto me while we both stared at our father with complete shock. He walked closer to us, with an outreached hand.
He placed a hand on my cheek and said:
“Boys should not wander out at night.”
Never before has the elf shown signs of violence. From that moment, we learned just what our parent was capable of.
We both took one of the rings. Nyr placed them on our finger. As the mysterious object and my hand made contact, I could feel a little pulsation. That must have been the magic he was mentioning. I peered at Ihlathi in efforts to see if he felt any sensation. Locking eyes, he shrugged his shoulders;
My brother’s smile was contagious. I absorbed his positive glow and beamed. What good the ring could serve us! We wouldn’t be prisoners of our own home anymore. As time for dinner came, Ihlathi shared another secret;
PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Umlingo can be an affectionate character. He does not care whether you are male or female. He may hug, kiss, or merely place a hand on a character's shoulder or back. Yet, that depends on how much he thinks of you as a friend.
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: He is not well adverse in the ways of properly showing emotions. Especially when provoked with anger, Umlingo may strike the causation of his stress.
ROMANCE/FLIRTING: Indeed the elf is flirtatious- Regardless of the other's gender or sex. If someone has a strong aura, then Umlingo may find himself enamored.
SEXUAL CONTENT: Intimacy is not often reached with Umlingo. Someone would need to possess specific qualities that aligned with the elf’s own spirit. He may be open to being tongue tied with a character; however, intimacy is not always on the mind.
PSYCHIC ABILITIES: Visions.
MAGIC/POWERS: Being a warlock from Dungeons & Dragons (Baldur's Gate III), Umlingo has unlocked various spells. The powers that will be transfered into a RP setting are: Eldritch Blast, Summoning Imps, and Frost Bite.
MEDICAL INFORMATION: He is a healthy 90 year old Wood Elf.
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS OR TRIGGERS: Umlingo is...clueless. He may say or do things that bother other characters. After all, he is a bit wicked and likes to tease others. What may trigger Umlingo is talks of childhood or enslavement. He is likely to help someone in a bad situation- especially, when it comes to being kept for illicit means. He may be a flirt and want to explore romance; however, he is very specific when it comes to intimacy. For instance, Umlingo does not like nor agree with prostitution.
⇓out of character⇓
BACKTAGGING: Yes
FOURTH WALLING: Player is okay with this, yet you will receive utter confusion from an elf who knows nothing about the 21st century.
THREADHOPPING:
CONTENT I ABSOLUTELY NEED WARNINGS FOR, BUT CAN STILL PLAY: I'm fine with horror. Though I would like to know, what sort of danger may befall Umlingo. Additionally, I would need a hint if another character would be interested in flirting with Umlingo. Just as he would not openly passionately kiss someone, it would be essential if a character asks beforehand. However, there may be a chance that Umlingo would turn that character down.
CONTENT I ABSOLUTELY NEED WARNINGS FOR AND THAT I CAN'T PLAY: Sex. I don't feel comfortable with, nor do I appreciate writing erotica. Just think about how many great films are ruined because of the sex scenes.
ANYTHING ELSE:

What may trigger Umlingo is talks of childhood or enslavement. He is likely to help someone in a bad situation- especially, when it comes to being kept for illicit means. He may be a flirt and want to explore romance; however, he is very specific when it comes to intimacy. For instance, Umlingo does not like nor agree with prostitution.

Character Background
• Umlingo is an Ukhuni Elf:
He grows up in a hidden elven community, Umndeni. In order to escape a toxic father, Umlingo is forced to kill his parent and flees. The young elf finds himself living on the outskirts of Saunders Village. While living on the streets, Umlingo becomes well adverse in thievery. Eventually, the villagers grow tired of the elf's mischief. Umlingo must leave the village in search of a safe home. During his travels, Umlingo hears a group of Sindre Dwarves discuss a rare treasure only found in the underground city of Podzemley Gorod. As events turn towards the worst, Umlingo is imprisoned by a Sumerki (Twilight) Elf. While under the noblewoman's captivity, Umlingo feels devastated. Despite his attempts to escape, the Ukhuni is no match for the Sumerki's trained magic. In a desperate call for release, Umlingo attempts to kill himself with his chains. Yet, the call of a Teufel (Devil) brings Umlingo a new offer. Hageleis insists on assisting the elf's escape. In turn, Hageleis demands that the favor be repaid by his own liberation from his icy prison in Pandemonium. Umlingo agrees upon the devil's terms; but also begs to forget his painful past. Hageleis assists him in repressing the memories while sending Umlingo to another continent. As time passes, Umlingo learns more of his Zauberer (Warlock) abilities. Although he needs more mastery, the elf can release magical blasts, and summon a fiend familiar.
• Core Relationships:
Twin brother: Ihlahti
As a child, Ihlahti was Umlingo's only age-appropriate companion. The two lived with a controlling father. Their mother died during childbirth. Even to the present, Umlingo never knew if his father blamed them for her death. The twins were often locked inside of their home. Despite being told to study, Umlingo and his brother would often tell each other stories; further, believing that narration was the best method to learn about the world. Umlingo respected and loved his brother. Once Ihlathi fled the home, his brother felt a pang of betrayal. Umlingo wished that his brother would have left with him. Later, the Ukhuni Elf reasoned that Ihlathi thought it would be harder should both of them try to escape home.
A Sindre Dwarven Bard: Nyr
The dwarf is the positive father figure that the Ukhuni Twins lacked. Nyr shares his knowledge of Andoria with the two boys. He teaches Umlingo and his brother how to speak in the Sindre tongue. The old bard prefers to teach history and tales through song. His creativity and positive energy has a lasting affect on Umlingo's love of bard culture. When Nyr is killed by Umlingo's father, the young elf is devastated beyond disbelief.
Mystikka Love: Laululintu
Once Umlingo reaches Jalokivi, he becomes intrigued by the folk he has never seen before. The Mystikka are created from the Teufel and thus have hellish features: from horns to tails and skin of various hues of reds, blues, purples, and even black. Of the matters of the heart, Umlingo falls in love with one Mystikka in particular. Laululintu is a bardi (bard). Initially, Umlingo cannot communicate with her and laments being unable to know what song she sings. Yet, through the elf's connection with his Schirmer, Umlingo can speak to her in the devil's tongue. Apart from their own language, the Mystikka can speak the language of the Teufel's living in Pandemonium. Laululintu offers to teach Umlingo her language in return, he would teach her common speech. The Ukhuni feels uncertain about being a teacher, but agrees upon her request. Eventually, she insists on him playing with her bardi troupe. Umlingo agrees with an eager heart. She teaches him how to play songs on a pan flute. Overall, Umlingo's love for Laululintu seems surreal. Yet, his pleasant experience ends in a vision of fire. He receives a premonition of Laululintu burning to death. The elf assumes that his debt to a Teufel is at fault. Reluctantly, Umlingo leaves his "Laulu" behind to fulfill his quest. He vows to return to the love of his life.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
Positive Moments:
1: Helpful
Before Amnesia: Despite being a rogue, the elf has a strong heart. Umlingo is known to steal for survival. Additionally, when he finds himself lucky enough to steal valuables, the Ukhuni tends to share with misfortunate children. While approaching the Riverwood bridge, Umlingo finds a child. The young boy demands payment for crossing the bridge. Of course, Umlingo could refuse. However, he pays the child with a stolen bracelet from frivolous mayor's home. The boy beams and 'allows' the elf passage into town.
2: Sociable
After Amnesia: Umlingo may not recall his much of his old rogue desires. Yet, the elf is soon able to recover his sociable self. While living on the shores of the Skina Aehir, Umlingo befriends a Sindre Dwarf by the name of Fiskarinn. The dwarf had helped the Ukhuni who washed up on the beach with a gash in his arm. Umlingo easily readjusts into a new home while assisting the old dwarf with household chores. Umlingo's good nature is more easy to see when he is not drawn to theft. Even when the elf must leave FIskarinn's home, Umlingo regrets stealing a dagger and map from the old dwarf.
1: Easily enamored with people:
Before Amnesia: While in Podzemley Gorod, Umlingo finds himself in a tricky situation. As a stranger and outsider, Umlingo should be more guarded against potential threats. Despite doubts of trust, Umlingo finds an agreeable friend in the Sumerki, Skrytvor. The two plan a heist in which they would target one of the city's major families. During practice, Umlingo finds the Sumerki pleasing to work with. Yet, the Ukhuni will learn that fellow thieves are not to be trusted. In turn, Umlingo's fascination with Skrytvor leads him to a path of betrayal.
2: Oblivious and lacks concentration:
Throughout his life, Umlingo struggles with a poor attention span. In his youth, the elf's father would chastise him for not being focused during studies. While Umlingo ages, he must remind himself to pay attention to whatever he is doing at the moment. There are moments when Umlingo would blurt out what he thinks without realizing he did so. For instance, when plotting to steal a fish, Umlingo tells himself to not be distracted. Yet, his thoughts slip out loud and are heard by an old woman. At first Umlingo thought the other was able to gaze into his mind. On the contrary, the elf is disappointed by drawing unwanted attention to himself.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: Einfrieren (Freeze), Zauber Welle (Sorcery Wave), Vertrauten beschworen (Summon Familiar), and night Vision (a natural racial perk).
• Blood Type: Pale Blood
• Omen: Fox
• Blessed Day: April 15th: Umlingo's true birthday is October 15th. However, in the spirit of rebirth, Umlingo's new birthday will be in the spring.
• Patron Pthumerian: Moss King: Umlingo at the moment does not recall his original patron. Yet, once he remembers Hageleis and his previous engagement with the Teufel, Umlingo will not be too fond of having a second patron.
• Blood Power Manifestation: Visions and Dream Walking. He may receive visions, but may not be able to impart them onto others. I do plan to give him some of his original abilities. Therefore, Umlingo's blood powers cannot be overwhelming for the course of his venture in Deer Country. As for Dream Walking, the ability may seem unusable since He doesn't require sleep. Yet, requiring a transient state for rest would make Dream Walking likely.

The Arrival to Deer Country
Oct. 28th, 2021 04:15 pmWithin the bottom of the abysmal sea, a frantic heart pulsates. Large bulbous eyes dart from one direction to another; however, despite their size, they see naught.
Where am I? an alarmed voice asks within the synapses of its mind.
Why is it so cold?
The need of the creature to generate heat emerges. Every cell of the squishy flesh responds to the frigid waters with an instinctual drive to move. The body feels the surroundings with each of its many limbs. Swishing through the water, the creature swims sidling; further, the being is unable to utilize its appendages. Upon focusing its intent to propel forward, the small being achieves a sense of synchrony. The multitude of tentacles contort and push behind the creature’s body. Through the force of each thrust, the creature darts forward through the darkness. The creature’s movement are without direction. Yet, in spite of being lost, the little one understands that motion is vital to survival. After all, there are no indications which suggest that the creature is completely alone. How should a single organism believe that the ocean is safe?
Once every fiber of the body feels warmth, a new drive takes precedent: hunger. Instinctively, the creature begins to forage for food. Perhaps, swimming closer to the surface will prove beneficial to the search. As the creature ascends, the water becomes warmer. The cells which construct the creature’s skin react to the change in temperature. Hunger may still be present, but the heat relaxes the being’s body. The little one can hunt in peace.
Suddenly, a school of fish glitter in view. The sunlight greets the creature for the first time. The bright glow excites the creature’s senses. With a burst of energy, the tiny hunter rushes towards the drove of fish. One tentacle shoots out like an arrow, followed by another, and another. The creature’s firsts attempt fails. However, on the second barrage of tentacles, one strike is successful. Each of the tentacles feel elated by the fish’s scent. A feeling of pleasure courses through the creature- from the nerves of its tentacles to the recesses of the brain.
This morsel tastes good! Exclaims a silent voice.
The creature’s many tentacles maneuver together to bring the meal closer to its mouth. Beneath a soft head, a beak as firm as a rock opens to reveal several sharp teeth. The creature crushes down on its prey. The fish squirms for a moment before being extinguished by its predator. Bones and flesh are eagerly devoured while bloody scales flake off into the ocean.
After a satisfactory meal, the creature swims playfully through its home. An urge to touch the surface takes hold of the little one’s mind. While popping its head above the water, the creature can enjoy the sun’s radiant light more than its initial encounter with the golden orb. Resting in the water, the being rides the waves; further, bobbing up and down like a seagull sitting on the sea. Eventually, the sun’s heat overwhelms the creature’s body. The little one decides to retire deeper into the ocean. Time passes and the creature preys upon another handful of fish. The day wanes into night.
Curious as to why the light differs, the creature rises to the surface. Stars glisten against a black sky. Their light mesmerizes the creature as it rocks on the waves while looking into the cosmos. The moon’s glow introduces the little one with less intensity as the golden orb. An unknown sensation courses through the creature. A slight panic of loneliness prompts the creature to bow its head in sorrow. Truly, the little one is lost in the darkness of a vast world.
Who am I? The creature’s thoughts whimper. What am I?
The question churns within a squid’s mind, only that the squid does not know it is called such. The moon seems to hear the creature’s longing for answers. Her radiance trickles down onto the creature’s skin. Additionally, a heavy sensation pulsates throughout the squid’s tiny frame. While caught in a trance, the creature’s eyelids close and the many limbs fall limp.
[Vision]
A wood elf runs through a bustling street. He laughs boisterously while being pursued by an angry man. By the man’s appearance, he is a fisherman. Clearly, the wood elf crossed him.
“Give back my squid!” the fisherman yells. “Somebody stop that thief!”
Despite the man’s efforts, no one seems to care. Onlookers prefer not to meddle in such frivolous affairs. The elf darts down an alleyway with purpose. He comes across a dead end. Smirking, the elf appears to have been in the situation before. With an acrobatic display, he rises along the trappings of the nearest building to maneuver over the obstacle. From behind the stone wall, he can hear the fisherman’s rage and confusion.
“Damn it! I lost him again!” the man kicks a rock and retreats.
“You’ve out done yourself today Umlingo!” the elf cheers with wicked delight. “A fresh squid!”
With the passing of the vision, the creature’s gaze returns to the night sky. He begins to feel a sense of recognition and cries out in revelation:
I am Umlingo! his mental voice chimes with excitement. He understands his identity, but another feeling is present. I’ve been turned into a mind flayer!
Umlingo the squid’s heart panics. His mind pulses and blurred memories come into view. He sees the tall squid-like beings and dreads that he is now one of them Yet, as his heart ceases to frets, Umlingo is able to think clear.
What a relief, his voice comes with a tone of acknowledgment. I guess I have to live out my days as a squid his voice continues to evoke acceptance of the strange fate. A yummy, delicious squid…
He touches his head with a tentacle. The situation is no longer dire, at least, not as terrible as the former cause of fear. Umlingo begins to nibble on his tentacle. Unfortunately, he cannot taste himself. No issue, he can always catch a scrumptious fish. Without a care, the transformed elf readjusts into his new role as a squid. Since there are no commitments other than survival, Umlingo is overwhelmed with a sensation of freedom. His memory of being an elf is limited, but he does recall magic. His new body does not seem to feel fantastical; moreover, Umlingo is but a mere squid. Perhaps magic is unnecessary in his current state of being.
I would have been a magical talking squid Umlingo voices internally as he recalls the mind flayers. Yet, I would have been bound to servitude. Even if I am a basic animal, I at least have my freedom.
Several days pass as Umlingo enjoys his time swimming through the beautiful sea. After a hearty meal, the squid’s tentacles tingle. Instinct drives him into a panic. He darts his eyes from side to side. Shortly, he understands why there’s a sudden urge to flee:
A SHARK!
He expels black ink into the water. With a cloud of muck, he hopes to promote a barrier between himself and the shark. Umlingo’s limbs contract and rocket him forward through the ocean. He needs a place to hide. A vision of coral enters the recesses of his mind’s eye. With a sense of urgency, Umlingo races into a new direction. Based solely on intuition, he travels into the path of the coral reef.
I’ll be safe over there. The tiny squid thinks to himself, desperate for a lucky deal.
Yet, fortune seems to be out of favor with the poor creature. The shark approaches from behind and lunges its huge head forward. The beast’s jaws catch one of the squid’s tentacles. With one jerk of the shark’s head, the limb detaches from the prey’s body. Umlingo feels pain searing through his being. He shoots out another spray of black ink. Alarmed, the shark hesitates, shaking its head to clear away the cloud. The chase continues. A coral bed appears in view. Umlingo notices a small opening. He swims as fast as his mutilated body can move. As the distance between the squid and his sanctuary shorten, another attack ensues. The shark manages to latch onto a second tentacle, blood spills into the sea as the beast rips off the delicate flesh. Despite the pain, Umlingo lunges into the hole. The beast rams its head into the coral as it attempts to reclaim its prize. Although the shark fails the race, the predator enjoys a snack of raw squid.
Umlingo struggles to calm his senses as he watches the shark retreat. He fears that his pursuer will only return. For the moment, the squid decides that rest is essential. Umlingo feels a hot jolt of pain coursing through his missing limbs. He moves them into view in order to inspect their condition. To his utter shock and horror, he sees a baby hand and foot…that of his old form!
What the bloody hell is happening? His senses intensify.
Umlingo’s confusion is prevalent as many questions race through his mind. How is he able to transform…Again? Upon a second glance, he notices that the humanoid appendages are increasing in size. He has no choice but to leave. Otherwise, the sanctuary he sought out will become his tomb. The squid’s gills inhale a deep breath of water. The surge of oxygen filters through the little creature’s body. Umlingo’s blood pumps forcefully and a wave of energy overwhelms the cells of his form. He darts out into the dangerous terrain. The humanoid limbs add difficulty in swimming. After all, he grew accustomed to his squid body; however, now, the human pieces do not collaborate well with the remaining limbs. Umlingo can feel his body swaying from one side to the other. As his heart races, the elf- squid’s body burns. His movement ceases. Remaining suspended in the sea, Umlingo’s tentacles curl inward, clutching his form in agony.
A new idea sparks into his mind. He brings a tentacle closer to his beak. With an unnatural impulse, Umlingo bites down onto the limb. Although the tentacle attempts to escape from the self-mutilator, it tears apart. Pain radiates through Umlingo. If he could scream, then he would wail for any to hear. On the contrary, his form is mute. The pained creature looks at the bloody appendage. In confirmation of Umlingo’s suspicions, another humanoid foot emerges from the wound. Carefully, he selects another tentacle and removes the limb from his body. Blood pools around the squid. Slowly, Umlingo continues to swim onward.
I must find shore. His thought reflects the will of manifestation; rather than, a general realization.
A numbing sensation courses through his mind. Umlingo panics as his squid form alters internally. Although he cannot see the metamorphosis, the being understands that time is limited. A full transformation can bring death if not completed on land. Umlingo receives a new vision:
Black sand.
With a newfound sense of direction, Umlingo follows his intuition. As his body continues to readjust, a familiar face arrives in view. The shark emerges from a distance. Urgency overwhelms the metamorphosing squid. Umlingo struggles to swim away from the beast. His previous movement as a full-bodied sea creature was significantly faster than now. The human limbs appear larger and healthy. In contrast, the tentacles begin to shrink and decay. Despite the violent pain, Umlingo proceeds to escape the shark. Suddenly, he begins to choke while the squid’s gills start failing. Umlingo lunges towards the surface. Once he breaks through the water, air rushes into the gills that are altering to accommodate mammalian lungs. He coughs out the remaining sea water.
An object catches his attention. From behind, Umlingo can see a fin breaking through the water’s surface. While glancing ahead, he rejoices:
Land!
His tired limbs and aching body jolt with adrenaline. The will to live empowers his very being. While striving towards the shore, Umlingo coordinates swimming with the tearing of his squid flesh. As each nautical piece is removed, his old body begins coming into full view. The elf-squid’s determination alone provides a few yards of sanction between him and the predator. The fire in his body quells and numbness gradually courses through the metamorphosed fibers.
Will I make it? He thinks to himself in doubt.
Doubt subsides as Umlingo rides a wave to shore. To his horror, the shark’s own stubbornness prevents it from retreating. A great wave equipped with the gnashing jaws of a beast approaches. In a quick motion, Umlingo rips off his squid head and throws it into the shark’s mouth. As the shark crushes the delicate flesh, Umlingo scrambles to his feet. He runs forward on the beach. While turning back, the elf notices that the beast has not returned to the sea. Instead of waiting for a current to reclaim the sea predator, Umlingo has another impulse. The anger of his traumatic cat and mouse situation boils into a need for vengeance. Umlingo’s emotions swell within his body. A familiar course of energy flows from the elf’s heart to his hand. Umlingo holds up a hand and a hot bolt of magic dispels from his palm. The shark receives the attack. Its flesh burns from the energy of an Eldritch Blast. The predator has become the prey.
Umlingo tries to laugh, but his vocal cords do not function. He coughs instead. While placing a hand to his face, Umlingo notices how small his head is. Mortified, the elf looks at the rest of his body. He appears full grown now, but from the neck down.
I have a baby head! He thinks to himself.
Weak from the day’s turn of event, Umlingo collapses to the sand.
Where am I? an alarmed voice asks within the synapses of its mind.

An Unexpected Turn
Aug. 8th, 2021 02:39 pmLife was going fine. Our company snuck an assassination in the goblin temple, defeated an ogress, and pick locked a hidden lever. Taking our spiraling descent deeper beneath the undergound temple yielded a surreal landscape. Is this place related to the Underdark? Possibly. The iridescent mushrooms add a whimsical touch.
What strikes the party as alarming- are the minotaurs. Not just one, but two beasts come pummeling down the rocky terrain! Of course, i have the devil's luck and am face to face with an aggressive bull. Luckily, teamwork prevails and I did not die...like some of the other times. We win some and lose some right? I'm proud though of how my imp fares in combat. He may be small, but is a fierce force.
